The Parkland Post #2 is the second-oldest post in Washington, says Keith Foley. Keith is the post’s adjutant, and has participated in the activities of the post for 24 years.
Generations of veterans visit the post, representing WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War. 9 WWII vets remain members, and 3 drive to all the meetings. 25 of the post’s members are Lakewood residents.
“Veterans Day is significant for us as veterans. Especially when you lose someone downrange and they don’t come back,” said Post Commander Tom Silva.
To honor the occasion, the post hosts a special Veterans Day breakfast each year. Local veterans and their families eat free, and civilians may donate $5 to grab a plate.
When asked about the importance of Veterans Day, Commander Silva grabbed a plaque and said “this says it all.”
I have done things that haunt me at night so that you may sleep in peace.
I have been away from my family for a long time so that yours can be safe.
I have sacrificed a lot in my life so that you may live free.
I have done these things because I have sworn an oath to my country.
And I will live by this oath until the day I die because I am, and always will be…
