Lakewood Police K9 Officer Anthony Bucat was recently awarded a Master Trainer certificate by the Washington State Police Canine Association (WSPCA), signifying a prestigious accomplishment.

This distinction is earned by only the most seasoned and dedicated K9 professionals in the state. With this honor, Bucat becomes one of only two certified Master Trainers in Pierce County.

As a Master Trainer, Bucat now plays a vital role in leading the training, development and certification of canine teams from law enforcement agencies across the region. His role will help elevate police K9 standards and capabilities. This milestone certification is not only a personal achievement for Bucat, but also serves as a major asset for the Lakewood Police Department, its K9 program and the larger Pierce County METRO K9 team.

To achieve Master Trainer status, Bucat had to complete several years of rigorous work, including meeting extensive qualifications like:

  • Active and continuous WSPCA membership in good standing for four years.
  • A minimum of four years working as a certified K9 handler in disciplines such as generalist, narcotics, or explosives.
  • The successful accreditation of his own K9 partner through WSPCA standards.
  • Consistent instruction (over 180 hours annually) for K9 teams outside his agency.
  • Demonstrated success in training a new handler-dog team to full WSPCA certification.
  • Completion of at least two years as an Assistant Trainer, including a probationary period.
  • Endorsements from WSPCA Master Trainers and formal support from their home agency.

Officer Bucat’s steadfast commitment to canine excellence, both on the street and in training, has earned the respect of his peers. His leadership will now help shape the next generation of K9 teams across Pierce County and beyond.
