112th Street Closure Begins June 15 for Safety and Mobility Improvements
112th Street between Farwest and Holden will be closed to through traffic during workweek hours from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., beginning Monday, June 15, for roadway improvements. This project will construct curbs, sidewalks, street lighting, and bike lanes on both sides of 112th between Farwest and Holden. The roadway surface will not be repaved.
Closing the roadway to through traffic will allow the contractor to construct both sides of the road, reducing the project timeline by 40% and completing construction by the start of the school year. The approved construction schedule shows the contractor starting on June 15 and completing site restoration work the week of September 16, but with the road closure, the contractor is expected to complete the work in early August. Electrical material lead time will have the street lighting and radar feedback sign installation later this fall.
Lakewood City Council to Recognize Pride Month with June 15 Proclamation
The City of Lakewood will recognize Pride Month during its June 15 City Council meeting with the presentation of an official Pride Month proclamation.
The proclamation affirms the city’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equal treatment for all residents while recognizing the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals and families in the community. Pride Month is observed each June across the United States to celebrate the history, achievements, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.
City leaders are expected to present the proclamation during the council meeting, offering an opportunity for residents and community members to join in recognizing the importance of fostering a welcoming and respectful community for everyone.

Summer Nights at the Pavillion Kicks off Tuesday, June 16
Summer evenings are about to get a little more musical as the City of Lakewood launches its annual Summer Nights at the Pavilion concert series on June 16.
The free community event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Pavilion in Fort Steilacoom Park and invites residents and visitors to enjoy live music in one of Lakewood’s most scenic outdoor settings.
Opening the series is Infinity Project, a high-energy Journey tribute band known for recreating the iconic sound and hits of the legendary rock group. Concertgoers can expect an evening filled with classic favorites and sing-along moments as the band takes the stage.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and friends for a relaxing night of music under the summer sky. Summer Nights at the Pavilion is a family-friendly event and a popular tradition that brings the community together throughout the season.
The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. on June 16 at the Pavilion in Fort Steilacoom Park. Admission is free.
Juneteenth Celebration Returns to Lakewood City Hall on June 20
The City of Lakewood invites residents to join the 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Lakewood City Hall.
Hosted by the St. Joseph–St. John Ministry of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, the event will celebrate Juneteenth through music, dance, poetry, history, and community fellowship. Families, friends, and neighbors are encouraged to attend this free event honoring African American culture, resilience, and contributions to our nation.
Earlier this month, the Lakewood City Council proclaimed June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth in recognition of the historic day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Share Your Ideas for Safer, Better Transportation in Downtown Lakewood
The City of Lakewood is launching a Downtown Transportation Feasibility Study and wants to hear from residents, businesses, and visitors who travel through the downtown area.
The study will focus on improving safety, connectivity, and access for people who walk, bike, drive, and use transit in the downtown subarea, including the Lakewood Towne Center and Lakewood Transit Center areas.
Beginning this summer, community members will have opportunities to share feedback through online surveys, community events, and future open houses. Public input will help identify transportation challenges, safety concerns, and priorities for future improvements.
The study builds on previous community engagement efforts and will help guide future transportation investments and grant funding opportunities in downtown Lakewood.

Desserts on the Driveway Brings Community Together, Next Event Set for June 18
The City of Lakewood’s Desserts on the Driveway series continues to connect residents with Mayor, Deputy Mayor, City Councilmembers, and city staff in informal, neighborhood-based gatherings focused on conversation and community engagement.
At the June 9 event held at the Tillicum Community Center, residents gathered with city leaders to share ideas, ask questions, and discuss neighborhood priorities ranging from traffic safety and parks to community programs and local services. The event provided an open and welcoming space for dialogue and strengthened connections between residents and city representatives.
The next Desserts on the Driveway event will take place on Wednesday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church at Lakewood. Tillicum Elementary Field Day Features Visit from Lakewood Police Department
Despite cool and rainy weather, students at Tillicum Elementary School enjoyed a fun-filled Field Day on June 5 with special support from the Lakewood Police Department.
Officers from the department’s Neighborhood Policing Section joined the event, bringing a patrol car, an armored vehicle, and a police motorcycle for students to explore. The visit gave children an opportunity to interact with officers, learn about police equipment, and build positive connections with local law enforcement.
The annual partnership between Tillicum Elementary and the Lakewood Police Department continues to be a highlight of Field Day, creating memorable experiences while strengthening relationships between officers, students, and families.
Motorized dirt bikes, e-bikes in parks: What you need to know
The City of Lakewood is seeing increased use of e-bikes and motorized dirt bikes, especially around city parks. Riders and families should understand where they can legally operate and how to do so safely.
Many of the devices officers encounter are electric dirt bikes that resemble motorcycles. Under the Lakewood Municipal Code, these may qualify as “motor vehicles” because they are self-propelled and capable of transporting a person.
Motor vehicles, including certain electric dirt bikes, are not allowed on park trails unless specifically designated for motorized use.
Currently, no Lakewood park trails permit motorized vehicles. These devices may only be operated on paved roads, parking lots and designated areas. The speed limit in parks is 15 mph, and all riders must operate at a safe speed for conditions.
Washington State law recognizes three classes of e-bikes:
• Class 1: Pedal-assist up to 20 mph
• Class 2: Throttle-assisted up to 20 mph
• Class 3: Pedal-assist up to 28 mph
Class 3 riders must be at least 16 years old. While Washington does not currently require helmets for e-bike riders statewide, helmet use is strongly encouraged. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious injury.
Violations of park regulations may result in a civil infraction and fines up to $125. Riders may also be asked to leave the park if their behavior poses a safety concern.
The City of Lakewood and the Lakewood Police Department are committed to addressing this issue through education first. Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk with their children about responsible riding, traffic laws and safe operation in public spaces.
Celebrate Safely: City of Lakewood and Lakewood Police Department Remind Residents About Firework Safety
As summer begins and the Independence Day holiday approaches, the City of Lakewood is reminding residents to help keep neighborhoods safe, clean, and well maintained while also celebrating the holiday responsibly.
With dry season conditions approaching, residents are encouraged to maintain their properties by keeping grass and vegetation trimmed and managed. Overgrown vegetation can increase fire risk and contribute to unsafe conditions in neighborhoods. Property maintenance requirements are outlined in the Lakewood Municipal Code, including Chapter 8.40 (Property Maintenance) and Chapter 8.52 (Vegetation).
The City also reminds residents that Fourth of July fireworks can create safety hazards when used improperly. The City of Lakewood and the Lakewood Police Department encourage everyone to prioritize safety, follow all local laws and manufacturer instructions, and use fireworks responsibly. Residents should always keep water nearby, never allow children to handle fireworks, and avoid attempting to relight malfunctioning devices.
Community members are also encouraged to be mindful of neighbors, including veterans, pets, and others who may be sensitive to loud noises. Planning ahead and celebrating responsibly helps ensure a safer and more enjoyable holiday for all.

HearMeWA Program Seeks Community Engagement and Provides 24/7 Youth Safety Support
HearMeWA, a statewide program within the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, is a free, 24/7 safety and well-being helpline serving youth up to age 25. The program allows young people to report concerns about safety, mental health, and potential harm through multiple access points, including phone, text, chat, email, and a mobile app.
The program is designed to help prevent harm by connecting youth with appropriate support services, including schools, behavioral health providers, community resources, law enforcement, child protective services, and emergency responders when necessary. HearMeWA handles a wide range of concerns, such as bullying, harassment, depression, anxiety, abuse, substance use, and other safety-related issues.
In addition to providing direct support, HearMeWA staff are actively engaging with local governments, schools, and community organizations to learn more about existing youth services, understand community needs, and explore opportunities for collaboration. Outreach efforts aim to strengthen partnerships and improve awareness of resources available to youth and families.

ACTIVE CLOSURES
112th Street – Farwest to Holden: 112th Street will close during the work week hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for construction beginning Monday, June 15. The contract is scheduled to be completed the week of September 16, but by closing the roadway during the work week hours, crews are expected to complete the project much sooner than that. Electrical material lead time will require street lighting and radar feedback signage to be installed later this fall.
FINISHING UP CONSTRUCTION
Steilacoom Boulevard Weller to 87th Ave: Repairs to damaged concrete/poles from vehicle accidents and utilities are being completed over the next month.
112th St SW – Gravelly Lake Drive (GLD) to Bridgeport Way (BPW): Lighting poles will be shipped in mid-August. Light poles will be stood once the contractor has the poles and can schedule crews for installation.
Grant Ave/Orchard Sewer Extension: The contractor is working on punchlist items throughout the project site.
UPCOMING CONSTRUCTION
Wadsworth/Silcox/Boat Sewer Extension: Work is expected to begin on the new sewer system in early July 2026. This will require full closures of these local access streets.
Custer Road – Bridgeport to 75th: This project will begin on August 1 and require an approximate 60 days of full closure to remove the pavement, install utilities, widen the road for a new two-way left turn lane, curbs, and sidewalks, and pave. Striping will be completed under a separate closure in October. A detour including Bridgeport Way and 75th will be in place during construction.
112th – South Tacoma Way to Steele Street: A resurfacing project along 112th Street between South Tacoma Way and Steele Street is expected to take place in July 2026. Most of this work will require full closures of 112th Street in the night hours over the period of a week.
