Professional Standards

Professional Standards are in charge of all department administrative functions. This includes hiring, conducting internal or background investigations, and officer training. Professional Standards also handles all citizen complaints. Periodically, they evaluate the department for policy, training, and equipment changes. Professional Standards maintains the Department Manual of Standards.

The division also works with the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Cheifs. This is to maintain the department’s standing as an accredited agency. This means that the Lakewood Police Department is held to the highest standards for law enforcement across the country. Professional Standards Division is responsible for keeping detailed records showing compliance and success.

Professional Standards works as the agency’s Internal Affairs division. This requires a high level of confidentiality and professionalism. It investigates all citizen and internal complaints of LPD employees. It also analyzes the use of force, motor vehicle pursuits, and agency-involved collisions. This is to ensure that training and policies meet the community’s needs.

This division also processes citizen praise and award recommendations. If praise is received for a department member, it is scanned into a report and forwarded through the chain of command. Similarly, recommending a person for an award is done through this process.
