Active Projects
In November 2024 the Lakewood City Council approved a contract with Active Construction, Inc. to complete pedestrian safety and road improvements to Steilacoom Boulevard SW between Weller Road SW and 87th Avenue SW.
The total project is estimated at about $6 million. The city applied for and received more than $5 million in grant funding for the construction portion of the project. Improvements include:
- Curbs
- Sidewalk
- Aluminum street lighting
- Bike lanes
Storm drainage will be replaced, and new traffic signals will go in at 87th Avenue SW, Hipkins Road SW, Briggs Road SW and Weller Road SW. The pavement will be overlayed and the road restriped with durable markings.
Construction is anticipated to start in early 2025. A construction schedule will be shared once it is finalized with the contractor. During construction, the road will remain open, but lanes will be reduced. Drivers should expect backups, especially during morning and afternoon commute hours. Plan accordingly and use alternate routes where possible.
Recently Completed Projects
These pedestrian safety and infrastructure improvement projects were recently completed across the city:
This project added sidewalks, curb and gutter, street lighting and a new traffic signal to Ardmore Drive SW, Whitman Avenue SW and 93rd Steet SW. A new road surface was also completed. This project created the missing link between newly built sidewalks along the Steilacoom Boulevard corridor to the city’s downtown Business District that includes the Colonial Plaza and Lakewood Towne Center.
This safety improvement project removed the outdated traffic calming measures known as chicanes and added sidewalks, curbs, gutters and streetlights to Hipkins Road between its intersection with Steilacoom Boulevard and 104th Street. The Lakewood Water District also upgraded its watermain, replacing aging pipes with a new main to carry water to houses. A roundabout was installed at North Way and Hipkins Road. The new sidewalks tie into improvements made in 2023 on Angle Lane and Elwood Drive, making a safe pedestrian connection to nearby Fort Steilacoom Park.
This project installed a pedestrian crossing signal at 84th Street and Pine to improve pedestrian safety and connect people to Wards Lake Park and the city of Tacoma’s Water Ditch Trail. It also added curb, gutter, sidewalks, street lighting, storm drainage and an road overlay to Pine Street SW.
Funded in part with Safe Routes to School grant monies, this project increased pedestrian safety on Farwest Drive. Improvements included adding sidewalks, curb, gutter and stormwater improvements and the addition of streetlights. The road surface was also overlayed with new pavement.
