Residents Connect with City Leaders at Custer Neighborhood Desserts on the Driveway Event
On June 18, residents of the Custer neighborhood gathered at the community garden at United Methodist Church for a Desserts on the Driveway event with City Council Members Patti Belle, Philip Lindholm, and Paul Bocchi.
The event provided an opportunity for neighbors to connect with city leaders, share concerns, and discuss ideas for improving the community. Topics raised by residents included the need for regular needle cleanup at Kiwanis Park, additional activities and programs for teens and pre-teens in Lakewood, and traffic safety concerns throughout the neighborhood.
Residents expressed particular concern about speeding vehicles on Onyx Drive SW near Oakbrook Elementary School and discussed the potential need for speed bumps or other traffic-calming measures. Community members also requested information about community gardens located throughout Lakewood and shared concerns about heavy traffic and congestion along 88th Street.
Desserts on the Driveway continues to provide a valuable forum for residents to engage directly with elected officials and city staff, helping to identify neighborhood priorities and strengthen connections throughout the community.
Community Comes Together for 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Lakewood City Hall
The 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration brought residents, families, and community members together at Lakewood City Hall on June 20 for an afternoon of reflection, education, and celebration.
Hosted by the St. Joseph–St. John Ministry of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, the event featured music, dance, poetry, historical presentations, and community fellowship, highlighting the significance of Juneteenth and the rich cultural contributions of African Americans.
The celebration provided an opportunity for attendees to honor the history of Juneteenth while recognizing the values of freedom, equality, and community. Guests of all ages gathered to learn, connect, and celebrate in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
The City of Lakewood extends its appreciation to the St. Joseph–St. John Ministry, event organizers, performers, volunteers, and attendees who helped make this year’s celebration a success. Events like the Juneteenth Celebration continue to foster understanding, strengthen community connections, and honor the diverse experiences and histories that enrich Lakewood.

The Lakewood Farmers Market continued its successful 2026 season on Tuesday, June 23, welcoming residents and visitors to Fort Steilacoom Park for another afternoon of fresh produce, local products, and community connection.
This week’s vendor spotlight features Brothers Farms, a longtime market favorite known for offering fresh, locally grown produce throughout the season. Brothers Farms brings a variety of fruits and vegetables directly from the farm to the community, helping connect residents with fresh, high-quality agricultural products while supporting local farming traditions.
The Lakewood Farmers Market continues every Tuesday throughout the summer, providing opportunities for residents to shop local, enjoy live entertainment, connect with community organizations, and spend time with friends and neighbors in one of Lakewood’s most popular seasonal gathering places.

Sound Funk Orchestra Brings the Groove to Summer Nights at the Pavilion
The 2026 Summer Nights at the Pavilion concert series continued on June 23 at Fort Steilacoom Park with another lively evening of music, community, and summer fun. Following the Lakewood Farmers Market, residents gathered on the Pavilion lawn with lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic treats to enjoy a warm summer night of free live entertainment.
Taking the stage for Week 2 was Sound Funk Orchestra, a high-energy band known for its dynamic blend of funk, soul, R&B, and dance favorites. The group kept the crowd engaged throughout the evening, filling the Pavilion with upbeat rhythms and creating the perfect soundtrack for a summer night in the park. Families, friends, and neighbors enjoyed dancing, relaxing, and connecting with one another in a welcoming community atmosphere.
Summer Nights at the Pavilion continues every Tuesday through the summer, with concerts beginning at 6:30 p.m. and featuring a variety of musical genres. Residents are encouraged to stop by the Farmers Market, grab a snack, and enjoy an evening of free live entertainment at Fort Steilacoom Park.
Lakewood Youth Summer Camp Registration!
Register today for the City of Lakewood’s 2026 Summer Camp! Designed for children to stay active, engaged, and have fun all summer long, this affordable program features exciting activities, games, field trips, and more. Camp will be held weekly, Monday – Thursday, from June 22 through August 6 at Idlewild Elementary School, with drop-off beginning at 8 a.m. and pickup at 5 p.m.

Lakewood SummerFEST returns August 15! Get ready for a full day of fun, food, and special 30th Anniversary festivities.
SummerFEST is Lakewood’s largest annual community celebration, running from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and featuring food vendors, a marketplace, live music, cultural performances, family activities, and signature attractions such as the Bombs Away Car Show, aerial motocross, circus performances, and a variety of interactive experiences for all ages. This year’s event also celebrates Lakewood’s 30th anniversary with special commemorative activities throughout the day.

112th Street Closed for Safety and Mobility Improvements
112th Street between Farwest and Holden will continue to be closed to through traffic during workweek hours from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., for roadway improvements. This project will construct curbs, sidewalks, street lighting, and bike lanes on both sides of 112th between Farwest and Holden. The roadway surface will not be repaved.
Closing the roadway to through traffic will allow the contractor to construct both sides of the road, reducing the project timeline by 40% and completing construction by the start of the school year. The contractor is expected to complete the work in early August. Electrical material lead time will have the street lighting and radar feedback sign installation later this fall.
World Cup Activity Continues as Seattle Prepares for Remaining Matches
The 2026 FIFA World Cup™ continues in Seattle, with several high-profile matches still scheduled to take place in the region. As visitors from around the world travel to attend these events, Lakewood residents may continue to experience increased traffic, heavier transit use, and larger crowds on major transportation routes connecting Pierce County and the Seattle area.
The remaining matches scheduled in Seattle include:
• Friday, June 26 at 8:00 p.m. PT: Egypt vs. IR Iran
• Wednesday, July 1 at 1:00 p.m. PT: Round of 32 Match
• Monday, July 6 at 5:00 p.m. PT: Round of 16 Match
As the tournament advances into the knockout rounds, travel demand may increase as fans, media, and event personnel move throughout the region. Residents traveling to Seattle or using major corridors such as Interstate 5, State Route 512, and regional transit services should plan ahead and allow extra travel time on match days.
Community members are encouraged to stay informed about traffic conditions, consider public transportation when possible, and anticipate higher-than-normal activity at transit centers, park-and-rides, and other transportation hubs. Even though Lakewood is not a host city, its location along key regional travel routes means local residents may still notice World Cup-related impacts.

July Marks National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month
The Lakewood Police Department partners with the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority (WATPA) to raise awareness of vehicle theft and to provide personnel resources.
The summer months historically see the highest rates of vehicle theft, and July is recognized as National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month.
WATPA’s annual awareness campaign is designed to educate the public on simple but effective steps they can take to secure their vehicles, protect their valuables, and reduce their risk of becoming a victim of auto theft.

Celebrate Safely This Fourth of July
As Independence Day approaches and fireworks go on sale Sunday, June 28, the City of Lakewood and the Lakewood Police Department encourage residents to celebrate responsibly and help keep our community safe.
The discharge of fireworks in Lakewood is prohibited except on Independence Day: July 4: 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.
With dry summer conditions increasing fire risk, residents are reminded to keep grass and vegetation trimmed and maintained. Property maintenance requirements are outlined in the Lakewood Municipal Code and help reduce potential fire hazards throughout the community.
When using fireworks, always follow local laws and manufacturer instructions, keep water nearby, never allow children to handle fireworks, and do not attempt to relight malfunctioning devices. Residents are also encouraged to be considerate of neighbors, veterans, pets, and others who may be sensitive to loud noises.
Reporting Fireworks Complaints:
Call 911 for fires, serious injuries, life-threatening emergencies, in-progress crimes, or any situation involving an immediate threat to life or property.
For non-emergency fireworks complaints or violations in Pierce County, residents can use FireworksReport.com from June 28 through July 7. Reports require the address where the activity occurred, along with the reporting party’s name and phone number. Reports are shared with local law enforcement agencies, which determine the appropriate response.
If a complaint is not eligible for online reporting, residents will be directed to call the non-emergency line at 253-287-4455.
Using FireworksReport.com for non-emergency complaints helps keep emergency and non-emergency phone lines available for urgent calls.
By celebrating responsibly and reporting concerns appropriately, residents can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone.

Notice of Public Hearing and Opportunity for Public Comment
Application Period Open July 1 – 31, 2026 for 2027 Comprehensive Plan Amendment Cycle
Changes to the Lakewood Comprehensive Plan, and some related changes to zoning code and development regulations, are allowable once per year under state law. As the first step in this process, the City of Lakewood invites interested parties to identify proposed changes. Afterward, the Lakewood Planning Commission and then City Council will review and confirm the list of amendments to be considered over the course of the year, including privately-initiated amendments. This list is known as the “Annual Comprehensive Plan Docket.”
Any individual, organization, business, or other group may propose an amendment. Applications to amend the Comprehensive Plan and associated Zoning Code provisions must be received by the Lakewood Planning and Public Works (PPW) Department online at https://cityoflakewood.us/permit-center/ between 8:30 am on July 1, 2026 and 5:00 p.m. on July 31, 2026. Proposals received after the deadline will be considered for inclusion in the 2028 Comprehensive Plan Docket.

Nyanza Rd Roundabout – Gravelly Lake Drive to Gravelly Lake Drive:
This project has reached substantial completion. The project is in the closeout process.
112th St SW – Farwest to Holden (Lake Louise Sidewalk Improvements):
The contractor continues installing new surface water drainage systems, and electricians are installing conduit and luminaire foundations. 112th St SW remains closed during working hours, Monday through Friday; it opens in the evenings and on weekends/holidays. Detour signage is in place.
Silocx/Wadsworth/Boat Sewer Extension:
Manhole deliveries have taken place; the contractor is expected to begin work the week of 7/13 near Wadsworth and Silcox. Sewer installations are expected to take approximately 2 months, with road restoration to follow immediately after the pipework is completed.
Custer Rd – Bridgeport Way to 75th:
The pre-construction conference for this project is scheduled for Tuesday, 6/30. This project provides for the widening of Custer Rd, addition of new curb & gutter, sidewalks, illumination, and other related work. TPU is currently relocating multiple power/utility poles throughout the project limits. The City’s capital improvement project is anticipated to start by mid-August, pending completion of TPU’s relocations and utility transfers.
112th Overlay – Steele Street to South Tacoma Way:
The pre-construction conference for this project is scheduled for Tuesday, 7/7, with construction anticipated to begin before the end of July. This project provides for ADA modifications, full-depth roadway patch repairs, and the overlay of 112th St between Steele St and South Tacoma Way.
