The City of Lakewood is adding sidewalks, curb and gutter and street lighting to Ardmore Drive SW, Whitman Avenue SW and 93rd Steet SW. New road surface will also be added where necessary. Once complete this will link newly built sidewalks along the Steilacoom Boulevard corridor to the city’s downtown Business District that includes the newly developed plaza on Motor Avenue and Lakewood Towne Center.
Project details
Adding sidewalks and making intersection improvements where these streets connect improves overall pedestrian and non-motorized access through the corridor. It also improves the road for drivers.
Reconstruction means the road will meet current road design standards, which include the addition of street lighting, curb, gutter, sidewalks and overall road surface improvements to eliminate cracking and asphalt spalling that is currently visible throughout the project boundaries.
Existing traffic signals will be upgraded with cameras for vehicle detection, and improved storm drain facilities will be installed.
Project area
The project area includes:
- Whitman Avenue SW between its intersection with Motor Avenue SW heading north to the intersection with Ardrmore Drive SW and 93rd Street SW.
- 93rd Street SW between its intersection with Bridgeport Avenue SW and Ardmore Drive SW and Whitman Avenue SW.
- Ardmore Drive SW from its intersection with Setilacoom Boulevard SW to the intersection with Whitman Avenue SW and 93rd Street SW.
Construction Updates
November 2023
During construction the road will be closed in segments, allowing work to go faster. Ardmore Drive from Steilacoom Boulevard to 93rd Street SW will closed Nov. 27, 2023. We expect the total project time to last 150 working days. A majority of the time will be passive, while we wait for traffic poles to arrive in summer 2024.
The current detour takes drivers from Whitman Avenue to 93rd Street to Bridgeport Way SW and Steilacoom Boulevard SW.
Local access will be granted to residents during construction who live along the affected area.
