Lakewood Weekly Manager’s Bulletin: Nov. 8, 2024

Honoring our veterans

America Flag

From City Manager John Caulfield: As we approach Veterans Day, I want to take a moment to honor and recognize the dedication, sacrifice, and bravery of our Veterans.  This day serves as a powerful reminder of the courage shown by those who have served our great nation, including many of our co-workers here at the City of Lakewood.

To our veterans, we extend our deepest thanks for your service to our country.  Your experiences and dedication continue to enrich our community and country in countless ways.

I was recently reminded of the following poem, that I believe is by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The poem serves as a reminder of the freedoms and rights we may sometimes take for granted and the sacrifices made by those who served and currently serve to protect them.

Veterans Poem

It is the Veteran, not the preacher, who has given you freedom of religion.

It is the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given you freedom of the press.

It is the Veteran, not the poet, who has given you freedom of speech.

It is the Veteran, not the protester, who has given you freedom to assemble.

It is the Veteran, not the lawyer, who has given you the right to a fair trial.

It is the Veteran, not the politician, who has given you the right to vote.

It is the Veteran, who salutes the Flag, who serves under the Flag, whose coffin is draped by the Flag.
