Lakewood Police Department Commissioning and Commendation Ceremony
The City of Lakewood celebrated the dedication and service of the Lakewood Police Department at the Commissioning and Commendation Ceremony on August 17, 2026.
The ceremony featured the swearing-in of new police officers, officially welcoming them to the Lakewood Police Department and recognizing their commitment to serving and protecting the community. The event also honored department members for their professionalism, exceptional service, and contributions to public safety.
The City congratulates the newly sworn-in officers and all those recognized at the ceremony. We are grateful to them and their families for their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to the Lakewood community.
Gimhae Sister City Visit

Lakewood and Gimhae have shared a Friendship City relationship since 2006 and officially became Sister Cities in 2022. Our partnership continues to create opportunities for cultural, educational, sports, governmental, and economic exchange, and visits like this help strengthen the friendship between our two communities.

We had an incredible day celebrating Lakewood’s 30th Anniversary at Fort Steilacoom Park. From live music and international performances to aerial motocross, circus acts, the Bombs Away car show, kids’ activities, food and market vendors, and so much more, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
A special thank you to our vendors, performers, volunteers, community partners, sponsors, and everyone who helped make SummerFEST possible. And, of course, thank you to all of you who came out to celebrate with us and make the day so memorable!

Custer Road Construction Update
The storm drainage installation wrapped up this week, and we’re excited to maintain momentum with streetlight conduit and grading work that will continue into next week. Tacoma Power has completed its power relocation, and three of the four communication lines have been relocated, with the last to follow in the coming weeks.

Westlake Street End ECY General Construction Stormwater Permit Public Notice
City of Lakewood, Stacey Reding, 6000 Main St SW Lakewood, WA 98499, is seeking coverage under the Washington State Department of Ecology’s Construction Stormwater NPDES and State Waste Discharge General Permit.
The proposed project, Westlake Ave Street End, is located at Westlake Street End: 47.1720, -122.5425. Westlake Avenue SW, Lakewood, WA 98498. in Lakewood in Pierce county. This project involves 0.24 acres of soil disturbance for Highway or Road, Other (ROW public access) construction activities. The receiving water is Lake Steilacoom.

Updates for the week of August 20 – 27

ACTIVE ROAD CLOSURES:
Wadsworth/Silcox/Boat Sewer Extension: Sewer construction on Silcox, Wadsworth, Boat, and 88th continued this week, with just a few cleanup items remaining on the pipe construction. The contractor will begin grading the roads for paving at the end of the month. Local access will be provided via detour routes, as applicable.
Custer Road – Bridgeport to 75th: Custer Road is closed to through traffic. Access to local parcels is available via Grange and Burgess. Storm drainage installation was completed this week. Streetlight conduit and grading will continue into next week.Tacoma Power has completed its power relocation. Three of four communication lines have been relocated, with the last to be relocated in the coming weeks so the existing poles can be removed during construction.
UPCOMING ROAD CLOSURES:
108th Street Railway Crossing Replacement: Sound Transit crews will replace crossing panels at the 108th Street railway crossing just east of Lakeview Avenue, beginning Friday, August 28, at 10:00 p.m. This will require a full closure of 108th Street to all traffic between Lakeview and Halcyon. Detour routes for the weekend are available via 100th Street or Bridgeport/Pacific Highway.
269 Lake Louise Drive Water Service: Lakewood Water District will install water service at 269 Lake Louise Drive on August 31 and September 1. This will require a roadway closure. Drivers will need to navigate around Lake Louise Drive to avoid the installation.
112th – South Tacoma Way to Steele Street: The overlay was completed, and utility castings have been adjusted. The project will be suspended until September, when permanent striping can be applied during a single-night closure.
