Lakewood Weekly Bulletin October 30, 2026

Remember to Turn Your Clocks Back This Weekend

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, Nov. 1. Before going to bed on Saturday night, set your clocks back one hour to “fall back.”

While you’re changing your clocks, it’s also a good opportunity to:

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Replace the batteries in your alarms if needed.
  • Take a moment to review your family’s emergency plans and supplies.

With shorter days and winter weather coming, spending a few minutes now can help keep your household safe and ready for the season.

Prepare for Fall and Winter Storms

As temperatures drop and clocks change, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) encourages customers to prepare for winter weather and possible power outages.

Although PSE invests in grid upgrades, maintenance, and vegetation management to improve reliability, severe weather may still cause service interruptions. We encourage residents to take steps now to stay safe and prepared.

Storm preparedness tips:

  • Keep emergency supplies at home and in your vehicle, including flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food.
  • Fully charge phones and backup battery packs before storms arrive.
  • Have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio available for emergency updates.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics during outages to help prevent damage when power is restored.
  • Download the myPSE app or visit PSE’s outage map to report outages and track restoration progress.
  •

Stay safe during outages:

  • Never approach downed power lines. Stay at least 35 feet away and report hazards to 911 or PSE.
  • Never use outdoor grills, generators, or charcoal indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Use flashlights instead of candles for emergency lighting.
  • Keep portable heaters away from furniture, curtains, and other flammable materials.

PSE offers rebates for energy-efficient home upgrades and bill assistance programs for eligible customers. Learn more at https://www.pse.com/en/rebates and https://www.pse.com/rebates/get-help.

Lakewood Street Sweeping Focuses on Fall Leaf Cleanup

As fall arrives in Lakewood, residents can expect increased street-sweeping activity throughout October and November.

The City has identified several High Organic Debris Areas (HODA) that street sweepers focus on during this time of year. These areas are particularly important as trees begin dropping leaves and other organic debris onto roadways. The city map below highlights the roads included in the HODA routes so residents can see where additional sweeping is scheduled.

Residents can help make street sweeping as thorough and efficient as possible by keeping vehicles and trash cans off the street on non-pickup days. Clear streets allow sweepers to reach more of the roadway and collect leaves and debris that can otherwise build up along curbs and gutters. Your cooperation makes a real difference in keeping our neighborhood clean and safe!

Rotary Volunteers Help Brighten Lakewood on Making a Difference Day

On Making a Difference Day, Lakewood Rotary members recently helped improve our community by planting bulbs at the roundabout near Veterans and Vernon Drive.

The Rotary Club’s Beautification Committee created the planting plan and teamed up with City staff to make it happen. Volunteers planted dozens of bulbs, which will bloom next spring and add bright colors to one of Lakewood’s busiest entrances.

This project is part of Lakewood’s ongoing work to keep the community looking beautiful.

This event supports the City’s annual Parks Appreciation Day and helps make public spaces more welcoming for everyone.

Lakewood Police Fallen Officers Food and Blood Drive

Help support local families and honor fallen officers by participating in the Lakewood Police Fallen Officers Food and Blood Drive. Community members are invited to donate non-perishable food items, make a monetary donation, or sign up to donate blood. This annual event, hosted by the Lakewood Police Department, benefits Emergency Food Network and Bloodworks Northwest.

Lakeview Residents Come Together to Form a New Neighborhood Association

Lakeview residents met at Lakeview Hope Academy on Wednesday, Oct. 28 to talk about starting a new Lakeview Neighborhood Association.

Led by Dustan Reed, the meeting gave neighbors a chance to share ideas, talk about community needs, and imagine what a neighborhood association could mean for Lakeview.

The association aims to help Lakeview become a stronger, more connected community where everyone has a voice and can work together. Some ideas are to organize community events, help neighbors get to know each other, and talk about issues that matter to the neighborhood.

A key topic at the meeting was making sidewalks safer, especially for kids walking to and from school. The association hopes to focus on things like improving walkability and tackling concerns that affect families and everyone in the neighborhood.

The Lakeview Neighborhood Association is meant to help neighbors build relationships, get involved, and have a place to share ideas and work together for positive change.

Mark your calendar!

The next Lakeview Neighborhood Association meeting is Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Hope Academy.

Road Project Updates for the week of Oct. 29 – Nov. 6

ACTIVE ROAD CONSTRUCTION:

Wadsworth/Silcox/Boat Sewer Extension: Curbs and sidewalks were poured this week. The contractor will return next week to pave driveways, complete the punch list, and demobilize.

Custer Road – Bridgeport to 75th: All street lighting materials have arrived except for three arms, which are expected to ship next week. Once all materials are received, the contractor will schedule installation. Minor lane closures will be required to install the poles but should not significantly impact traffic.

UPCOMING ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS:

Kendrick Street – 111th to 108th & 111th Street – Bridgeport to 112th: Bids were opened on October 21, and Lakewood received competitive bids below the engineer’s estimate and budget. After review, the award is expected to be forwarded to City Council for consideration on Monday, November 2. Construction is expected to begin in December or January.

This project will implement a green street concept with new pavement, curbs, bike lanes, sidewalks, planters, street lighting, storm drainage, and water main replacement along Kendrick between 111th and 108th Street. 111th Street will receive similar improvements, except for street lighting.

The Park Legacy Plan is an important document that captures the needs of Lakewood’s future park system.  The draft plan was online for resident review and comment through September 30.  Comments will be compiled and will be used to finalize the plan for adoption, slated for the Nov. 2 City Council meeting.

Camp Murray Boat Launch Master Plan.  This plan examines opportunities for potential development at the Camp Murray Boat Launch, currently operated by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.  The master plan includes concept drawings of potential improvements and will also recommend funding and future operations.  The Master Plan is in its final stages of completion based on steering committee and public input and is slated to go before City Council in November.

Capital projects in design and development:

  • Nisqually Interpretive Trail Loop at Fort Steilacoom Park: This project is now in production, with interpretative signs and materials being ordered for installation late this year. The project was developed in partnership with the Nisqually Indian Tribe and is primarily supported by grant funding from the Department of Commerce.
  • Westlake Street End Pilot Project: Westlake Avenue is the City’s first street end development. The City previously assessed the existing conditions and development potential of these lakefront sites  through a street end water access study conducted in 2022.  See https://cityoflakewood.us/lakefrontstreetends to learn more.
  • Edgewater Park: This project is in design.  This project will both protect and improve the shoreline, improve parking and access, and replace the existing boat launch.  Project permitting is slated to begin in fall 2026 and extend into 3Q 2027 because of the rezoning of portions of the park, the complexity of shoreline development, and extensive local and state agency review.
  • H–Barn Restoration at Fort Steilacoom Park: The City is working with Partners for Parks on the design and fundraising for this project.  The project is slated for 60% design completion and a fundraising update in December 2026.
  • Oakbrook & Primley Park: These neighborhood parks will receive accessibility and amenity improvements in early 2027.
