The role of the Lakewood Arts commission is to assess needs, establish priorities and make recommendations for the enrichment of the community and promotion of its cultural vitality through the arts.

Description

The Lakewood Arts Commission:

  • Promotes the visual, performing, and literary arts;
  • Encourages the creative help of local artists;
  • Makes public art recommendations to the City Council;
  • Supports community-building events; and
  • Fosters the City’s cultural heritage.

Member Responsibilities

Committee members must attend regular meetings. If members miss three or more meetings, they may be dismissed by City Council. Members are expected to adhere to the City of Lakewood’s Code of Ethics, respect other members, and be flexible.

Terms of office are three years.

Requirements for Membership

  • Members must be residents of Lakewood
    • Exception: The member is not a resident, but their participation benefits the City. This could be through business involvement or art expertise.
  • At least one member must be a working professional artist
  • At least one member must work in the Lakewood education community
  • At least one person must be currently active in a Lakewood community organization.

Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
